I remember the first piano I ever played. My mother loved music and made sure that it was a part of our daily lives growing up. To this end, she talked my father into buying us a white baby grand piano, which was displayed prominently in our living room against a beautiful backdrop of ceiling-to-floor windows. It was the most aesthetically pleasing spot in the whole house, which made it a very inviting place to spend hours and hours of my time. Though this did not turn me into a piano virtuoso, it did instill an appreciation and understanding of music in me from a very young age, and helped me to cultivate my musical skills as I started to learn other instruments (trombone, violin, and voice). The benefits of this casual, practical introduction to music theory live on today in me.

If you decide to add music into your house, purchasing a piano is a good option.  When I took piano lessons as a child I knew that I was learning a skill that would last a lifetime.  Being a piano player is much like riding a bike.  It is a talent that you simply do not forget.  Though I no longer take piano lessons, I can sit down at any piano at any time and play a song or two.

Remembering the Tune of a Piano

Many of us probably have memories of growing up hearing the piano played in church: the melodic sounds reverberating throughout the hall in the form of an extravagant prelude, or perhaps a hymn, solo or the postlude following the benediction. Nowadays we might often hear piano music in the form of jazz or easy listening (think Michael Buble) or the famous pieces of composer & pianist Elton John.

An Upright Piano’s Journey Home

Imagine my father’s face when I came home from school one day and asked for a check to pay the teacher for six piano lessons that I had already taken. I was only in 6 th grade and unbeknownst to my parents; I went to my school’s music room and requested lessons. Luckily, my father not only signed the check but also allowed me to continue to take lessons.
