Should I bring my piano teacher to decide on buying my piano?
Buying a piano is a little like buying a car: it’s an asset — and a beautiful one — that you want to own and take pride in for a long, long time.
And as with any major purchase, it often helps to take a trusted friend or expert along for the ride to review your choices and help steer you to the best decision. In the case of buying a piano, that trusted person might very well be your piano teacher, who probably knows his or her way around the strings and ivories.
That said, considering that your piano is probably going to be a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, you want to ensure that your piano teacher has stayed current on changes in the piano marketplace with regard to price, design and warranties. A piano teacher who hasn’t set foot in a piano showroom in 20 years might be as helpful as a car enthusiast who scans a new car lot in pursuit of a Renault 4 (which ceased production in 1992).
So begin your piano search with a sense of purpose, for your piano is bound to outlive even your car. In fact, the average lifespan of a piano is about 40 years, according to the National Piano Ma
To block the sense of "sticker shock" that afflicts so many car buyers, do a little research before you go shopping to get an idea for what pianos cost. Then set a budget. The association recommends buying the best piano you can afford, even if you’re purchasing one for a child who is beginning piano lessons. "Making good music on a quality instrument is the best way to keep a young pianist interested," the association says.
Then there is the matter of space. Be sure that you have a 5-by-5-foot area to accommodate a spinet, console, studio or vertical piano. Generally, the bigger the piano, the better the tone.

Music is a great way to express myself. Whether playing an instrument or singing, music adds beauty to life. I feel that being able to play the piano is an amazing talent. Making that purchase was the next logical step for me.
Pianos are expensive and when we bought our piano we looked at it as an investment in our children. Not only could I play it but as my children grew up they too could benefit from playing piano.
Deciding whether or not we wanted to purchase a new piano or a used one was our first decision. After looking at prices we decided that for now we would look at used pianos.
But just because we chose to buy a used piano didn’t mean that we wanted quality to suffer. We still wanted a good used piano. A great used piano if we could find one.
I’ve included a list of some of the places we started looking-
1. The Classifieds-
This is probably the first place most people would start looking for used pianos. Picking up their local paper and turning to the ‘musical instruments for sale’ section.
2. CraigsList-
Craigslist is almost the same as looking in the classifieds for used pianos. The difference here is that because it is online you may end up finding one that sounds great but ends up being hours and hours away.
3. Estate Sales-
Most times estate sales are because of death of a parent or grandparent who owned a beautiful piano but none of the remaining family members want it or else they don’t know how to play, making it useless to them. Great pianos are found at estate sales.
4. Reputable Piano Dealers-
These piano dealers can be a good resource too. They may know of pianos for sale. They may have some for sale that they have rebuilt. The price of a rebuilt is usually cheaper than a new piano and if you find a piano from a good manufacturer, buying used pianos in this scenario could be a great investment due to the increasing value of these.
5.-Piano & Music Store-
This ended up being where we chose our piano from. The people at music stores are not only kind and helpful, which is good, but they know their stuff. This is their specialty. So if you are looking for used pianos, my suggestion would be to purchase from a reputable music store.

I have taught many piano students over the years. I started in San Francisco at Yamaha Music School and taught music classes for ten years, and then I moved to Atlanta. I have been teaching private piano lessons ever since then.
My overall philosophy with students is to try to inspire them, yet at the same time, teach them piano technique. If the student develops good habits with technique – piano hand position being the most critical – the rest falls into place. Once this happens, the rest is easy as far as theory, note-reading, and repertoire. At the same time, it is important to give students songs – popular, classical, and traditional holidays – to keep them inspired.
I also encourage students to bring in pieces that they want to learn as they usually go in leaps and bounds at the lessons. My goal, as a piano teacher, is to be sure the piano students have a strong foundation so they can then increase their repertoire and also begin to study other instruments as well.
It has been so satisfying to me to have students come back and thank me for teaching them how to play the piano as it means so much to them in their overall lives.
