I was reading a novel the other day when my wife popped in to remind me our son, who is 12 and our daughter, 11, needed something besides video games in which to invest their time. I agreed, asking what she had in mind. Well, how about a Yamaha? I gawked, asking if she meant the Yamaha? Sure, she shrugged, it’s the best model, isn’t it?
She drove and I asked if she was sure this was a good idea. She had apparently done some research, informing me the president of this company was a fourth generation dealer who had been in a rock band when he was 13, that the staff knew their business, and they offered the Sevicebond Assurance Program which meant a free visit a few months after purchase to tune your Yamaha to ensure premium sound. And, she added, they are a lot more affordable than any other company!
Now, I loved that my practical wife was thinking Yamaha, asking if she thought we could afford two Yamahas. No, she said, one would be plenty and the kids could share. What size, I wondered, what model? The G2, she responded, maybe a Yamaha Grand in the Conservatory Classic line. Wow, she really knew her stuff! And you’re not afraid of the kids getting hurt? She laughed, reassuring me that some of the healthiest, smartest people in the country had learned on a Yamaha Grand Piano. Oh, that Yamaha!

Baby Grand Piano- Will it Fit in My Room?
I learned long ago that of the two types of piano – the Vertical and the Grand – the Grand is the superior model. For many piano-lovers and owners such as myself, however, the full-sized, concert Grand is well beyond my pay-grade. Because of its superior sound, it is fortunate that smaller models exist, with the smallest being the baby Grand piano, which is just a miniature rendition of the wing-shaped, horizontal concert Grand.
The very next question I had after taking in a baby Grand piano at the renowned Cooper Piano establishment in Atlanta was “will this piano actually fit in my room?” The answer was, of course, a resounding “Yes!” Unless my home was a mansion with extra-wide doors, there’s simply no way that a Parlor Grand or concert Grand piano – the next largest size – would make it inside in one piece. The baby Grand piano was made specifically for this purpose; with fabulous acoustic engineering that leads it t retain almost the full timbre and range of the master class.
When compared to the gargantuan ten-feet and several-thousand-pounds size of the Grand piano, the baby Grand piano usually boasts a manageable dimension of between five and six feet; though this can go as small as five feet flat (these measurements are from the tip of the keyboard facing the player, to the rear of the piano case). These dimensions can fit readily into most any room; there are several top-notch brands that produce these scaled-down versions of the concert Grand pianos they also manufacture.
Cooper Piano has several of these world-famous baby Grand pianos available at just about any point in time, whether they are the beautifully-strung Samick baby Grand. The five-feet-five-inch Baldwin baby Grand, or the exquisitely-made Kohler and Campbell will both fit in my room. All of these Grand pianos would fit in my room, and so I don’t need to sacrifice my preferred type of piano – the Grand – in favor of the Vertical model of piano, just to save space.

I have always thought that what a Picasso is to the world of art, a German immigrant’s greatest creation is to the world of pianos. This genius master cabinet-maker, whose pianos bear his namesake, was actually born Heinrich Steinweg, before the trip from his native Germany to the bright lights of New York inspired the Anglicization of Steinweg to Steinway.
With a clear and unmatched aptitude for intricate handiwork, Steinway and his seven sons – one remained in Germany to promote the family name via piano construction – waited until they had already built nearly 500 hundred of their uniquely-crafted Grand piano before deciding to turn it into a legitimate business; Steinway & Sons was born. No sooner had the fateful announcement been made, than the awards for their handiwork (one from the Queen of England, no less) began pouring in; the demand for their pianos skyrocketed afterwards. Though of course they always remained firmly at the helm of their company, they had to hire hundreds of hands to aid them in construction to meet this demand, and made sure to file hundreds of patents along the way, so unique were the amendments they made to the classic grand piano structure.
I do not exaggerate when I say that kings and queens figuratively bowed before the master craftsmanship of Steinway & Sons; several monarchs followed in the foot-steps of Queen Victoria in endowing the Steinway men with the prestige of royal warrants, which are akin to royal exclamations of “Thank you; you do excellent work!” Such was the effect of the almost magical acoustics engineered by them, those users of Steinway pianos hosting concertos gave the generic name “Steinway Hall” to any public place in which a Steinway was being played.
